Edy Setijono, President Director of the Borobudur Temple
Tourism Park (TWC), announced an increase in ticket rates to the top of the
Borobudur Temple stupa region for domestic tourists of Rp750,000 and US$100
for overseas visitors. A coordination conference with the central government
was held to make the decision. Meanwhile, regular admission to the Borobudur
Temple area remains the same, at Rp50,000 for domestic tourists and US$25 for
foreign visitors. Students can gain unique entry to the Borobudur Temple by
purchasing an Rp5,000 ticket for educational purposes. Here are five of the
reasons why the manager and government agreed to raise the price of the
Borobudur temple stupa area:
1. Weathering and land
subsidence have occurred at the Borobudur Temple.
To avoid
misconceptions, Central Java Governor Ganjar Pranowo instructed the management
of the Borobudur Temple Tourism Park (TWC) to educate the public about the
intention to charge Rp750,000/person for local tourists. "To climb the temple,
it was conveyed yesterday so that there would be management by managing it
through tariffs, that's approximately the case," Ganjar said on Sunday in
Semarang, Central Java.
According to Ganjar, the decision was not
adopted on the spot but after considering several factors. "One of them is the
conservation of the Borobudur Temple, which has recently declined." Today,
tourists are not permitted to enter Borobudur Temple," he explained. According
to research by many experts who provide feedback to the government, the
historic landmark, Borobudur temple, is currently beginning to weather.
Furthermore, climatic change, volcanic eruptions, and earthquakes pose a
threat in and of themselves.
2. Daily quota of 1,200 people
Edy
Setijono, President Director of Borobudur Temple, Prambanan, and Ratu Boko,
indicated that the increase in ticket costs in the stupa area was determined
by a quota system per day for those who were allowed to climb to the top of
the Borobudur Temple. The government has imposed a limit of 1,200 individuals
per day who can ascend to the top of the temple.
The quota
determination intends to protect the Borobudur Temple building or conservation
to preserve the archipelago's historical and cultural heritage. Edy reported
that the Borobudur Temple edifice began to deteriorate and erode, which was
considered caused by increased tourist traffic. "What does it imply, people
who wish to go up to the temple must genuinely desire to go up to it?" People
who wish to snap pictures don't have to go up to the temple; instead, they can
go downstairs. That is the goal. So, people go to the temple because they have
paid a high price, and I believe they will be severe, learn, and study," he
stated.
3. Non-commercial
Edy Setijono also stated that the
IDR 750,000 payment for local tourists who wanted to climb the temple was not
for business reasons. The manager continues to offer unique access to students
who wish to study at Borobudur Temple for a charge of only IDR 5,000 per
student. "As part of our commitment to the globe of education, students pay
only Rp5.000." This is why it is so pricey as if it is commercial. No, it is
not for commercial reasons; the motives are other. As a result, pupils pay
only Rp5.000," Edy explained. Unique access to these students will be granted
to up to 20% to 25% of the entire allotment of 1,200 people per day.
4.
Vandalism and littering
According to Coordinating Minister for
Maritime Affairs and Investment Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan, Borobudur Temple, as
a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site, deserves special attention to maintain
the archipelago's historical and cultural value. Borobudur Temple, according
to Luhut, has several vulnerabilities and threats. Beginning with natural
hazards such as weathering and land subsidence caused by climate change and
progressing to the acts of tourists, "Please check or inquire with your
management contacts there." Not to mention people who like to vandalize,
insert things between the temple stones, litter, and fail to recognize
Borobudur Temple as a Buddhist landmark. "All of this requires specific
management," Luhut continued.
5. Ecotourism
Luhut Binsar
Pandjaitan, Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs and Investment stated
that the government certified the Borobudur Temple region as an
environmentally friendly tourist attraction. Following that, all modes of
transportation in the Borobudur and Prambanan Temple sites must be
ecologically friendly. In addition to operating electric buses for tour
guides, there are also online motorbike taxi drivers in the Borobudur area,
with all their fleets powered by electricity. Electric charging stations have
also been developed and opened in the Borobudur and Prambanan districts. "We
expect that there will be no more fossil vehicles in Borobudur, especially
next year, because all of them must utilize green energy," he said. The
government has set up Rp6.8 trillion for this purpose.
