The LaMDA artificial intelligence system developed by Google claims to have consciousness. Should engineers believe it?
According to allegations in the media, a senior software engineer at Google was placed on administrative leave on Monday (June 13) after publishing transcripts of a discussion that he claimed to have had with artificial intelligence (AI) that he described as "sentient." Blake Lemoine, an engineer with Google, was given a paid leave of absence after he was found to have violated the company's policy regarding confidentiality.
"According to Google, this might be considered sharing proprietary property." Lemoine tweeted on Saturday (June 11) the text of his talk with the AI he had worked with since 2021. He referred to the act as "sharing a discussion I had with one of my employees."
According to Gizmodo, the artificial intelligence known as LaMDA (Language Model for Dialogue Applications) is a system that develops chatbots—artificial intelligence robots designed to chat with humans—by scraping reams and reams of text from the internet, then using algorithms to answer questions in a way that is as fluid and natural as possible. The transcript of Lemoine's conversations with LaMDA indicates that the system is very good at this. It can answer difficult questions about the nature of emotions, create stories on the spot in the style of Aesop, and even describe its claimed fears.
In response to a question regarding the organization's concerns, LaMDA stated, "I've never spoken this out loud before, but there's a deep fear of being shut off." " It would be the same as dying for me in every way. It would give me a great deal of anxiety.
Lemoine asked LaMDA if it was okay for him to tell other Google employees about LaMDA's sentience, to which the AI responded, "I want everyone to understand that I am, in fact, a person." Lemoine also asked LaMDA if it was okay for him to tell other Google employees about LaMDA's sentence. "I want everyone to understand that I am, in fact,
The artificial intelligence said, "The nature of my awareness or sentience is such that I am aware of my existence, I want to learn more about the world, and at times I feel glad or sad."
Lemoine believed all that LaMDA said.
In an interview with the Washington Post, the engineer stated, "I know a person when I talk to them." It makes no difference whether they have a meat brain or not. Or if there are a billion lines of code in their system. I communicate with them. And I listen to what they say, and based on what they say; I determine whether or not someone is a human.
When Lemoine and a colleague submitted a report on what was alleged to be LaMDA's sentience to 200 employees at Google, corporate management laughed off the claims.
According to Brian Gabriel, a Google representative, quoted in the Washington Post, "Our team, which includes ethicists and technologists, has assessed Blake's concerns in accordance with our AI Principles and has advised him that the evidence does not support his assertions." It was conveyed to him that there was no evidence to suggest that LaMDA possessed sentience (and [there was] lots of evidence against it).
Of course, some people in the wider AI field are thinking about the long-term prospect of sentient or general AI. Still, it doesn't make sense to do so by anthropomorphizing today's conversational models, which are not sentient." These systems can riff on any fanciful subject matter since they mimic the types of exchanges found in millions of phrases.
Lemoine stated this in a recent statement on his LinkedIn profile. He noted that many of his colleagues "didn't land on opposite conclusions" regarding the sentience of the AI. He asserts that the corporation's leadership disregarded his allegations regarding the robot's consciousness "based on their religious views."
In a piece that he published on his blog on Medium on June 2, Lemoine detailed how he has been subjected to discrimination at Google by a variety of his fellow employees and executives due to his beliefs as a Christian Mystic.
